Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:

Actor. (b. June 9, 1961, Edmonton, Alberta.) Who would have guessed that this wee sitcom star would replicate his TV success on the big screen, becoming such an engaging young leading man? Certainly the odds were against it: many TV personalities have failed to make the transition, and the brash, diminutive Fox could easily have been a washout. He'd appeared in films before achieving success on TV, first in the obscure Midnight Madness (1980, Disney's first PG-rated movie), and subsequently as the runty, bullied high-school student in the ultraviolent Class of 1984 (1982). Cast as irrepressible yuppie-in-training Alex P. Keaton on the TV sitcom "Family Ties" (1982-89), though, Fox shot to immediate stardom and won three consecutive Emmy awards. Amazingly, this success transferred almost as quickly to film when he was selected to replace Eric Stoltz (midway into production) as time-traveler Marty McFly in the Steven Spielberg production Back to the Future (1985), reprising the role in two sequels (1989 and 1990, which were actually shot back-toback). While he does possess a winning mix of subtle naivetŽ and wise-guy opportunism, his stabs at more serious fareLight of Day (1987), Bright Lights, Big City (1988), and Casualties of War (1989)-have not met with critical or commercial success. Fox is married to actress Tracey Pollan who played his girlfriend on "Family Ties."
